"ACTIVE is a first-class organization. From the booking process to the final good-byes, no detail is overlooked. The breadth and depth of Sally's organizational skills, knowledge of Peru's geology, geography, culture and history, as well as her superior interpersonal skills, made this trip incomparable."

"I was very impressed with this young man. He was personable, insiteful and helpful. He was aware of what was going on and some of our personal issues without being intrusive. He often had solutions to issues before we made him aware of problems. He was aware of our physical capabilites and provided a safe enviornment at all times."
Ian Davis (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) Dec 2009 Condor

Outdoor activities on our South America tours

Hiking, reverse canyoning, biking, sea kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving are just some of the outdoor activities available on our South America tours.

Our South America adventure trips include the best outdoor activities each region has to offer - such as jungle trekking and rafting in Costa Rica, hiking in Patagonia, biking and sea kayaking in Peru, scuba diving or snorkelling in the Galapagos Islands - as well as a wide range of other fun activities you may not have even heard of. For example, reverse canyoning in Ecuador! Our guides will make sure that you have a great time - whether it's your first time trying an activity or you're keen on improving your skills.

If your favourite outdoor activity isn't included in this page, don't worry. In addition to our scheduled multi-sport trips in South America and the Galapagos Islands, there are plenty of optional activities available and we can also run custom trips from 5 to 22 days based on your special interests. If you're interested in a particular activity, you can join a scheduled trip, create a custom trip or join a portion of any trip - call or email us and we'll sort out the details for you!

HIKING/TREKKING

Hiking is a major part of our trips. Our Jaguar includes hiking around the Islands of Lake Titicaca, the Amazon jungle, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and an awesome four-day hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Our Tapir includes a variety of stunning hikes through the virgin Amazon jungle and Cotopaxi National Park. Our Galapagos Islands tour, the Tortuga, takes you hiking to the summit of the grand Sierra Negra volcano on Isla Isabela and also the lush highlands of Isla Santa Cruz. But perhaps our most spectacular hiking trip is our 14-day Patagonia adventure – the Condor – which includes a four-day trek through the legendary Torres Del Paine National Park. Our hikes are not easy touristy walks and can be challenging to some people, and therefore rewarding. We are here to encourage you, assist and interpret the environment and look after you! The hikes we undertake are in some pristine areas of Peru, Patagonia, Ecuador and the Galapagos. We hike through the unforgettable Andean wilderness on the four-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, ascend the mountainous forested terrain overlooking a beautiful subtropical river valley and the town of Baņos and hike deep into virgin Amazon rainforest.

SEA KAYAKING

We love to paddle, and we certainly know the most stunning and unique sea kayaking spots in South America to do it. On our Jaguar trip in Peru you'll have the chance to sea kayak across to a local community on Lake Titicaca. This is one of the most amazing paddling trips you're ever likely to do - the scenery is incredible as you paddle across to Amantani Island on the highest navigable lake in the world! ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA is the only operator to sea kayak across Lake Titicaca and we'll continue to find the most off the beaten track places to paddle in South America!

BIKING

An ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA adventure vacation wouldn't be the same without some biking through spectacular scenery so we provide the opportunity to do lots of cycling on our trips. On our Jaguar and Tapir trips there are opportunities to ride around the volcanoes, highlands and valleys of Peru and Ecuador, while on our Tortuga trip in the Galapagos you'll have the chance to cycle around the gorgeous volcanic surroundings of Santa Cruz Island. We believe cycling in amazing scenery is a great part of an ideal outdoor vacation, not riding all day, every day. You can cycle when you feel like or not at all, it's up to you. We design all our activities to be as challenging as YOU want them to be, or not at all.

SNORKELLING

You'll do some amazing snorkeling on our Tortuga trip in the Galapagos Islands. Our guides will take you to the best spots where you'll share the water with friendly sea lions, sting rays and thousands of other marine animals in crystal clear waters. You don't need to have any experience snorkelling to take part. Our guides will show you how it's done and point out the marine wonders of the Galapagos' best snorkelling spots.

DIVING

If you're SCUBA certified you'll love the diving in the Galapagos. You'll have the chance to dive the unforgettable Isla Lobos and Kicker Rock dive sites famous for their Manta Rays, hammerhead sharks and beautiful walls of Galapagos coral. All of our dive sites, some of the best in Galapagos, have been carefully selected and also double as excellent snorkelling and swimming areas, so you don't have to dive every spot we visit but there is more than enough to keep even the most experienced dive veteran satisfied!

JUNGLE TREKKING AND EXPLORATION

We explore the Amazon jungle on three of our trips - the Capybara family trip and the Tapir. We like to get active while we are in the jungle, exploring all the possibilities. We hike through virgin jungle, look out for giant otters and other wildlife, paddle a dugout canoe on an Amazonian oxbow lake and look for caiman at night. We'll also visit a local community, try reverse canyoning, and even go caving!
