“Many people like to see what other people who've taken our trips thought. We publish the full range of surveys. You trust us with your precious time, and we take that trust seriously. We are kinda a wee bit nuts about integrity, actually. As you can see, most of our clients love their trips. We have a very few less than happy clients, and we always do our best to learn from that. We do our best, but like everyone, we sometimes make mistakes. Just not often. Adventure travel is not for everyone. Just most people :) ”

I have been looking forward to going to the Galapagos for a long time and I love being active, so this trip seemed perfect for me. It did not disappoint me. I loved hiking, kayaking, snorkling and biking all over the Galapagos. The guide, Pablo, was the best guide I have ever had on a trip. He explained the unique plants, animals and geology of the Galapagos in a exciting and fun way. I highly recommend this trip to anyone. It was so amazing so all the animals up close but still in their wild environment.

Trip trip was fantastic and one of the best trip I've ever made. It was well organized with perfect balance of activities, relaxing and learning. I've really enjoyed thanks to professional guides and nice people we've met. Islands were so beautiful and I've never seen animals and birds so close to us. There are not so many places I'd like to feel going again as I'd like to go to see new places but Galapagos is definitely the place that I'd like to come back soon. I appreciate Pablo-san, Tim-san and Nick-san who made trip really enjoyable for everyone.

Our trip was everything I expected, and much more! Plenty of hiking & cycling all over the Andes..Machu Picchu is mind boggling - and the top of Machu Picchu mountain itself lent a perfect backdrop to propose to my now-fiance! Thanks Active! We'll be looking for you again somewhere else in the world!

Review by Matthew Cring (St Thomas, Virgin Islands, Virgin Islands (U.S.)) for Jaguar Mar 11 2012
The trip to the Andes, as well as the rainforest, was truly the trip of a lifetime. Our guide Arturo was a wealth of knowledge along the trip, and very friendly as well. It was like having a friend along that knew everything about the history, architecture, and culture of the area. The hike through the Inka Trail was especially difficult for me, just due to my incredible fear of heights. Our guide on the trail, Gerson, was amazing at trying to keep my mind of the the heights when we were walking along the steep ridges. He stayed by my side and never made me feel bad about my fear. I would never have been able to do it without him, and I'm grateful for that. The rainforest, and especially the lodge, were also spectacular. We were successful in seeing several species of monkey, pirhana, and countless large insects. Thank you all for a great trip!!

One of my favorite trips Apr 16 2012
Review by Marilyn Austin (Seal Beach, California, United States) for Tortuga Jan 20 2012
Most of my trips have been cycling but this is my 2nd multi-sport trip. The first was 9 years ago with Active New Zealand. I can't say enough about how enjoyable both were. This last one to the Galapagos was very special. I am now 72 and had some concerns but I was able to accomplish most of the planned outings. My favorite part was the snorkling. Although our leader Pepo was knowledgeable about all aspects of the trip, he was exceptional with the underwater creatures. I caught on quickly to stay close to him because he would spot the most camaflaged and hidden samples of natures wonders. I liked that we stayed on the islands.
I also went body boarding. Pepo arranged to rent a board. I told him I wanted a good one and what he located was perfect. (I used to be good at bodyboarding in California but it had been a number of years since I did this.) Although we had to hike over 2 miles to the ocean, it was worth it. After kayaking in the morning then hiking and bodyboarding, I was really tired but such a special day.
Patagonia-more than just clothes Apr 15 2012
Review by Chris Trend (Annandale, New Jersey, United States) for Condor Mar 18 2012
I had heard great things about hiking in Patagonia from several people. Turns out, I hadn't heard nearly the whole story. From start to finish, this was an amazing trip. The landscape and scenery is as good as it gets. Sweeping vistas of snow capped peaks, meandering rivers, colorful valleys, Condors riding the thermals, massive granite towers, glaciers and alpine lakes of jade and turquoise. It was the kind of trip which invigorates the body and spirit. The tour leader was amazing in every way. Sweet and caring and knowledgable and willing to do anything to make our time as enjoyable as possible. The hikes were definitely challenging, but the rewards were well worth the effort. Food and accommodations were top notch, even in the more remotes areas. We were lucky to be in a group of terrific people, but I think the natural beauty of the land and the tireless efforts of Cinthia, our guide, would have made the vacation awesome, no matter what.

Review by Jo-Anne Walker (Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand) for Jaguar Mar 11 2012
My Jaguar journey far exceeded expectations, was great value, educational, well organized and such a lot of fun. The Active guides were outstanding, Arturo went above and beyond the call of duty on every single occasion, mixing his finely tuned sense of humor with required empathy or support whenever required. He is indeed knowledgable and an impressive man of high calibre. Gerson impressed with his huge knowledge but even more admirable was his patience and support of team members whenever or wherever he was needed. ... One slight criticism ... Occasionally our guides were not totally prepared for the weather extremes and had to stand in t shirts in pouring rain or on the top of a hill in hail or howling wind... I realize probably not a ' do or die' situation but a $2 poncho works wonders. This is a very small flaw in an otherwise well oiled machine.
Another slight annoyance, but who knows how it could be changed, the rare occurrence of a hot shower in our hotel in Cuzco, this hotel otherwise worked perfectly for our home away from home, however a hot shower, even a time limited one, is an essential wind down after a long physical day and more often than not someone had been there first, alas luke warm at best.
Call me thick but I didn't totally understand the concept of leaving our larger bag in storage at our hotel and use our smaller sports bag for each individual 4 day journey. A friend who had earlier walked the Inca Trail ,explained the concept more fully and I was perfectly prepared and very happy with how the system worked. However, I didn't fully understand this concept from the website, maybe eliminate the information that we would use the porters special bags for the Inca trail, maybe this is too much info and makes the 2 bag concept confusing..... Or maybe it's just me!!!
I was just so happy to have been so well cared for by such outstanding guides that I have already sold the Active South America to 2 kiwi friends and will definitely become a repeat customer.
Cheers Jo-Anne Walker

What a fabulous trip! Patagonia is amazing, from the sights that will take your breath away to the people that will welcome you with a smile and open arms. Not knowing the language, I imagined I would feel overwhelmed. Cynthia was a fantastic bridge between cultures, always available to assist with traslations and constantly educating the group about the area and the people. Her love for the region is obvious and her excitement absolutely contagious! Fantastic trip with a fantastic leader!

Our Condor trip was amazing. Our guide, Cynthia, was always prepared, organized, and smiling, and went out of her way to make sure everyone was happy and comfortable.
The hiking trails were well-maintained and took us to magnificent places, but the hikes are definitely not for couch potatoes!
Accomodations were clean and more modern than I expected, with friendly staff. The food was exceptional, with plenty of vegetarian options.
Overall, I'd give it an A+!

From start to finish this was an amazing trip. Within an hour of landing in the islands we were on the go. We kept a brisk pace throughout but did have time after dark to watch the night sky, a serious reminder of why we call our galaxy the milky way. On the last day we were still stopping to see tortoises, crawling through lava tubes, and checking out intriguing formations on the way to the airport.

What a fantastic experience! Sitting on beaches next to slumped sea lions or posing iguanas was incredible. Not to mention snorkelling with over 200 sharks on Christmas Day - what a present! Then there were the beautiful turtles, so graceful, gentle and friendly and the Giant Tortoises ambling slowly through the grass. It really was the most memorable trip and I would definitely do it again!

Review by Patti Beaver (San Diego, California, United States) for Tapir Jan 15 2012
This trip was a blast!! Every day we had an exciting and active experience - bicycling down a volcano (rather scarey at first), river rafting in the rain (wonderful, we never even had to paddle except for the rapids), trekking through the jungle, up streams, through dark caves with bats (it was so exciting), and the best was reverse canyoning (what a thrill).
Hiro was a great guide and Christian was so funny and informative, just like a kid!
Awesome experience.

Review by Patti Beaver (San Diego, California, United States) for Tortuga Jan 20 2012
A fabulous week in the Galapagos. Every day was a new and exciting activity. Loved staying on the islands and the boat rides were refreshing (we "played" with a pod of dolphins). Galakiwi did a superb job of ensuring that all ran smoothly (and it did). Tim and Crystal are amazing. The snorkeling was awesome and all the knowledge that Pepo enthusiastically shared with us was so educational and interesting. He is the best! It was a fabulous week.

Review by Star Waring (Boulder, Colorado, United States) for Tortuga Dec 30 2011
As we experienced with our Active New Zealand bike trip a few years ago, Active took care of our needs. The tour guides were able to fit our interests and make the whole trip happen. The Galapagos are an amazing place in the world. The Active trip itnerary gave a great overview as well as indepth understanding of this remarkable place and the differences of each island. Staying on land gave an experience that would not be available by staying on a boat - it certainly was more "active".
Patagonia, jaw-dropping beautiful Feb 3 2012
Review by Ken Burns (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, United States) for Condor Jan 15 2012
The 'trip of a lifetime' cliche really applied to this one. The Rio Acensio Valley hike was beautiful. It's hard to match the classic Torres del Paine view you get when you pop over the final ridge, but the two big hikes near Fitz Roy did just that. Awesome hikes. We missed out on the French Valley hike due to the fires, but Active excels at adjusting to meet circumstances. They took us up the Bader Valley instead. Everyone in the group thought it was a great hike with great views. Given the circumstances there was nothing but praise for picking this hike.
The guides and the group help make Active trips so special, and our guide, Cynthia, was a perfect example; knowledgeable and caring. She's the best.
This was my second Active trip and I'm ready to sign up for a third.

Best Trip Ever Jan 22 2012
Review by Michael Allan (Boulder, Colorado, United States) for Tortuga Dec 30 2011
The Tortuga trip to the Galapagos was AMAZING! First off, getting to stay on the islands is a huge plus, that allows us to keep doing land based activities, or snorkeling off of the beaches into the evening. The land-based option also gave us a chance to dine at the local restaurants every night.
My favorite night was spent on the quiet beach of Floreana island. We enjoyed a great night watching the sunset on the beach and sharing stories with our tour group. The next day we were right back at it doing some kayaking and snorkeling.
Nick, our Active guide, went above and beyond in taking care of our group. He made sure we all got to experience the thrills of South America every day, and always knew where to take us on the islands to show us a special time. Our naturalist tour guide, Danielle, did a great job keeping things moving while providing insight and humor to keep the mood ever light.
It was obvious during the tour that the Active team has worked hard to establish some great relationships on the islands with the local community and that gave us the opportunity to do some extraordinary things on the islands. From getting to go on some off the track hikes to dining at local places, I really felt like I was being shown a unique trek while on this tour.
I have traveled across Europe, Asia and the South Pacific, and I can honestly say this was my favorite tour ever. The combination of the Active team, the group of people Active attracts to their tours, and location cannot be beat.

Could do with a return to the thermal baths at Papallacta. So restful after a week of streeeeeeeeeeeeetching my "talents"!

Our trip into Patagonia Argentina and Chile was a trip of a life Jan 8 2012
Review by Heather Robbins (Anchorage, Alaska, United States) for Condor Nov 27 2011
The weather was unusually warm with a cool breeze, making the trail ideal for hiking, viewing the sureal scenery, and even dipping toes into a frigid glacial lake. The trip was fully booked; there were 12 of us total with people from the US, New Zealand, Australia and even Finland. With such a diverse group, we were all amazingly compatible, and friendships were quickly made. Our guide Cynthia helped keep things running smoothly and showed us some amazing sights and pointed out details of the land around us that we might have otherwise missed. Even though this trip was a bit more expensive than the other options we reviewed, I think it was well worth it. We had a limited amount of time available to spend, and Active South America consolidated some of the best areas to visit with travel arrangements included, making our action-packed adventure run smoothly.

We need to congratulate on the choice of Carlos as guide. He did an excellent job! He was able to adapt the trip's itinerary to our needs and the availability of options. He genuinely cared about our well-being and satisfaction. On top of this, he was a very pleasant person to be around, he played with our kids, cared for the poor and old people we encountered and gave us such a wealth of information about the history of Peru and its people and the modern Peru. He even organized a typical American Christmas dinner!

The trip was filled with excitement and challenges. The guides were all delightful. By noon time one day, we had already done a bike trip, a zip line and white water rafting. It was amazing. I loved the places we visited in Peru on this Jaguar trip! Nov 14 2011
Review by Gail Young (Boise, ID, United States) for Jaguar Sep 25 2011
Machu Picchu was everything and more that I expected, and I loved all the towns and places we visited. I was particularly impressed with the Andes - I had not thought specifically about how impressive and beautiful they would be. The people were so colorful and industrious, warm and welcoming. The fumes from diesel fuel were difficult to deal with when walking around Cusco, Puerto Maldonado, Puno - most all towns with vehicles, but otherwise I enjoyed all of the exploring that we did. We were definitely kept active, and I enjoyed the variety of activities. I loved the Lares Trail, but would also entertain the Classic Inca trail if I do come here again. The altitude did have an influence on my appetite, sleep and energy levels - particularly by the end of the two weeks, so I would take extra measures in the future to combat my altitude fatigue! I would definitely recommend this trip for the adventurous, active soul!
What made this trip so fantastic, besides the places we visited, was our guide!! Sally is absolutely the best and most top notch guide that I have ever had on a trip! She was not only so organized, patient, responsible, mature, active and in great shape, but she was so knowledgeable about all aspects of Peruvian culture, the traditions, the history, customs etc. She was fun, funny, always available, knew and was well-liked by everyone we linked up with on the trip - other guides, restauranteurs, hoteliers etc. etc. I cannot say enough about what a treasure and gem she is. She definitely made our trip even more worthwhile!

Review by Denise Graves (San Francisco, California, United States) for Jaguar Sep 25 2011
I've been wanting to visit Peru and Machu Picchu for many years, and signed up for the Jaguar trip, which included Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lake Titicaca. Active did not disappoint. Having travelled with a number of other companies before, this was the most well-organized and fulfilling trip so far! To begin with, the home office personnel were incredibly responsive and the information provided was comprehensive. Once in the country, I felt like I could not have been in better hands with our group guide as well as the other local guides along the way. Our group guide was not only highly professional and a complete pleasure to be around (for days on end!), but was also an absolute wealth of information -- from the history, culture and politics, to the incredibly diverse plant and animal life. I chose the Lares trail, which involved traversing through villages and over mountain passes where we encountered local people where they lived and worked their land. Our time in Lake Titicaca also involved a soccer game with the locals, as well as dancing in the local attire and a home stay. As a result of having more interactions with the local people in their environment, I enjoyed a more intimate experience compared with my other trips. I feel like I was able to connect with the Peruvian people and the country, and left more enlightened about both. Overall, nicely balanced in terms of activities and very well organized/professionally executed. I would do it again, and definitely recommend this trip to others! I only wish that I would have had the time to visit the Galapagos as well! Heartfelt thanks for an Amazing and Active Adventure!

Just finished the 14-day Jaguar trip. What an awesome time we had. Everything was well organized and where it was supposed to be when it was supposed to be there. I have done 2 other "adventure tours" before and the activities, food and accommodations on this one were by far the best. Can't say enough great things about our leader and substitute mother, Sally. She arrived every day with a big smile and boat load of enthusiasm about the days activities and her countries marvels, history and culture. She was always looking out for us and like all good mothers, had eyes in the back of her head. She even knew when we snuck out of the hotel late to get one more Pisco Sour and watch the Peru / Paraguay football game with the locals. Despite the fact our group of 8 came from widely different backgrounds, and 4 of us came on our own, we connected instantly. Everyone looked out for each other and I now consider myself to have 7 new friends. We are already talking about new adventures together. Great Job Active South America and Sally.
The Galapagos Islands were magical for me Oct 20 2011
Review by Gail Young (Boise, ID, United States) for Tortuga Sep 16 2011
The Galapagos Islands were magical for me - as awe inspiring and interesting as I always thought they would be. The amount of activities was just right, as well as staying on land rather than on a boat! I found the fauna most interesting, but also loved the geography of the islands and the volcano hike on Isabela Island. Daniel was a terrific and professional guide - very knowledgeable, interesting and passionate about taking care of the Galapagos. He grew up with a naturalist father and understands about the ecology, conservation, preservation, scientific research, and all that goes into maintaining the important balances of the islands. We also had a great group of people to travel with!

From arrival to departure - this trip was beyond expectations. Yes, it was active, but we were so well taken care of - thank you Arturo. Thank you for your sense of humour, understanding, knowledge and intuition. The biodiversity was incredible. The views forever imbeded into our memories; the people welcoming with an obvious belief in family and friends; the food an exceptional gastronomical experience we didn't anticipate. I miss ceviche and the opportunity to continue tasting over 2,000 potato varieties and pisco sours from the Amazon. Active does it best - thank you!

Review by Susan Dunn (Couridjah, New South Wales, Australia) for Tortuga Jul 6 2011
Going to the Galapagos was a big decision as it is not the cheapest place to get to from Australia. After the trip with Active South America, we are telling all our friends and family that if they have ever thought about doing this trip, then go for it. We had the most marvelous time with experiences that beforehand we had only dreamed about. The amount of unique wild life, especially during the snorkelling trips, exceeded all expectations. To swim with juvenile sea lions, eagle rays, sharks, sea turtles, not to mention a myriad of fish, could not be experienced anywhere else. The walks and the land animals were also a great experience. Every day brought a new adventure and we smiled from the start to the end of the trip.

She was also very accommodating and entertaining. We would highly recommend this trip. Just be ready to be VERY ACTIVE!!!!!!

As my semester abroad came to an early end in Chile, I was looking to go to Peru and see Machu Picchu. Active just sort of popped up and I went for it (with the help of the Active crew). I wasn't sure what to expect and I have been to some pretty cool places before, but this trip was one to remember. Yes, it rained AND snowed during the "dry season" but Sally didn't let it keep us down. She took care of any glitches before they even became glitches and was always there to answer questions or just talk to. Maybe one day when I grow up and actually have money I can come back and do another active trip...because I already know it'd be worth it.

What friendly people live throughout the country from the cities to small villages, everyone makes you feel welcomed even with limited languages in common. My group and trip leader made the experience even better. Great group of people and Cynthia was an excellent trip leader, always happy to help with planning, questions or encouragement. An Amazing journey with like minded people. At times the Inca Trail was extremely difficult but what a feeling when you reach the saddle on that 2nd day. The whole group has bonded and we all helped one another to fulfill the journey of a life time.
Then the floating island and the people on Lake Titicaca - again nothing similar have I seen - a must see. The night on the Island was a challenge and you just realized how fortunate we are to be able to travel and learn about these people. They all so poor but extremely happy.

May 1-14, 2011 Jaguar Adventure May 25 2011
Review by Colleen Drenckhahn (Phoenix, New York, United States) for Jaguar May 1 2011
Where do I begin? Every part of this wonderful adventure offered through Active South America was fantastic. I have dreamed of visiting the various sites in Peru since I was a teenager (30+ years ago); this trip surpassed all my expectations.
Arturo was a phenomenal guide: I feel that I speak for everyone in our group when I say that we truly appreciated his historical knowledge, technical prowess, infinite patience, positive attitude, and most of all...his choices in restaurants! Arturo is a definite asset to his profession.
We were fortunate to have beautiful weather the entire trip. Machu Picchu was even more magical and magnificent than I had ever dreamed. Julio, our little group's Classic Inka Trail guide was a joy to be with. His infectious laugh and in-depth knowledge of the trail and surrounding areas made our trek interesting and fun. The side trip to Paulo's traditional Inka-style home was a pleasant surprise appreciated by us all. It helped bring history to life, and his hospitality warmed my heart.
I must mention the outstanding service provided by the Porters and Cook: they made this trek so enjoyably relaxing. There was always much merriment in the camp and on the trail. Gourmet meals and snacks (minus the parakeet seed trail bar, that is ;-) were a definite delight on the trail.
Having tea and hot wash water delivered to your tent was another luxurious treat that they spoiled us with. How will I ever be able to camp on my own again?? For me, the trek ended all too soon on Day 4 at the Sun Gate at dawn. I remember thinking...how can they possibly top this experience? I was about to find out.
The Amazon Jungle portion of the trip gave us accommodations that were extravagantly relaxing. Once again, we had beautiful weather, which helped bring about our numerous monkey, parrot, caimen, and insect/spider/scorpion sightings; including several javalina and capybaras.
The greatest thing of all, and the least expected, was our jaguar sighting and subsequent photo opportunity! The big cat sat on the riverbank long enough for us to get numerous close-up shots of it. Arturo was as happy and excited to see it as we were. What a fantastic experience to see this beautiful cat in its natural surroundings!!
On the final leg of our journey we traveled to Puno and Lake Titicaca where we once again enjoyed beautiful, mild weather. The boat trip and kayak outing to the various islands helped emphasize just how large the lake is. After a long Upstate New York winter, it felt great to be out on the water again. I was literally and figuratively on top of the world!
Regarding our family stay: both Jennifer and I were pleasantly surprised that our family accomodations were so luxurious. We had our own beds, in a cozy second floor room with a balcony that had the most spectacular view of the lake. Julian and Lucia's house was warm and welcoming...and provided us a cultural experience that we will never forget.
Another experience that touched my heart and warmed my soul was when Arturo took my "toy bag" on our hike to Pachemama mountain. The two of us had such fun handing out the pencils, paper, and various toys to the little kids. They truly appreciated our little gifts of friendship.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the food experiences throughout our trip: They were awesome!! We visited a variety of local restaurants and markets. I can't say enough about the amazing variety of dishes that comprise Peruvian cuisine. Fresh fruits, vegetables and meats/fishes. There was something for everyone. Portions were good sized, and always served with a smile. The chicken and Alpaca in Cusco was outstanding...the trout and kingfish in Puno: fantastic...the seafood in Lima was scrumptious. I can't even begin to describe how wonderful their desserts were! If you are a bread-lover, beware: their breads are so delicious and tasty...BUT are usually only served at the morning meal! They had a sweet bread that we tried in a market in Cusco that I could have eaten all day long...it was SO good!!
From the tastly cuisine to the phenomenal scenery, friendly people, and spectacular wildlife sightings...this trip most certainly surpassed all my expectations. My thanks to: Arturo, Julio, Daniel, Frank, Oswaldo, Julian, Lucia, and everyone else who made this the trip of a lifetime! May all your travels be filled with sunshine and gentle breezes!

Accommodations were good but the highlights of the trip were the expertise of our guides and the hospitality of the Peruvian people.

Cynthia Valaquez(sp) was a fabulous trip leader. Our group of 10 met up in Cusco, a delightful city and after a few days of exploring, hiking and biking we went on to climb the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, an amazing journey in itself. It took 3 nights and 4 days...the porters were incredible and the food was delicious. Machu Picchu is a dream city in the clouds of the Andes mountains. No picture does it justice. Now I understand the word "mystical". We also went to a lovely jungle lodge in the Amazon Basin and to Lake Titicaca where we visited several islands, kayaked, and spent time with a family on Amantani Island. The Uros reed floating islands were like nothing I have ever seen. I have a real feeling for the country of Peru and its wonderful people after this trip with Active South America.

My dad and me in Patagonia Mar 24 2011
Review by LuAnne Thompson (Seattle, Washington, United States) for Condor Mar 6 2011
We had an amazing time in Patagonia. Cynthia and all of the local guides (especially J) made it possible for both of us to participate in the trip to the maximum. I got in the long hikes, and my dad saved his knees so he could complete the W-hike. The care that Cynthia took of both of us allowed us to have this incredible time together that we never could have in any other way. I came home ready to take another Active Trip. People talk about life changing trips, and I never knew what they were talking about, but now I do.

Review by Sharon Su (Providence, Rhode Island, United States) for Condor Mar 6 2011
Active trips continue to amaze and exceed all expectations. Just when I thought Active New Zealand was the trip of a lifetime and could not be replicated, along comes Active South America - Patagonia. This trip was just as unbelievable, fun, and memorable. Once again, I was extremely fortunate to be surrounded by fun, active, joie de vie group of travellers and another outstanding trip leader. Not enough words can describe Cynthia - a free spirited, passionate, generous, warm, caring, loving, and extraordinary special soul. She made us feel like a family and made it very difficult to part ways after only 14 days. She showed us why Pataganoia is such a special place and I cannot tell you how much I miss it so. Once again, I made wonderful friendships and hope to cross paths with each individual. Thank you for another life-changing trip.
Survival of the Fittest Mar 23 2011
Review by Frank Gorecki (Olympia , Washington, United States) for Tortuga Mar 2 2011
The Tortuga tour engages the intellect, traveling on Darwin's path to evolution theory, the physical with multiple opportunities every day, and of course, the direct experience with Tortoise, Sea Lion, Marine Iguana, and the incredible bird populations. Pablo's knowledge enriched this experience while Tim and Crystal enured our safety and timely logistics. And by the way, i've snorkeled in the South Pacific for decades and this was the best week ever from the sharks, to the turtles, sea lions, iguana and more.

Review by Bronwyn Vincent (Olympia, Washington, United States) for Tortuga Mar 2 2011
Absolutely loved this trip and hardly know where to begin to describe its wonders. Active South America/Galakiwi was an inspired choice in terms of outfitter. Tim and Crystal were attentive and, with Pablo, went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure all of us had a fabulous time. Pablo was an absolutely outstanding guide - enthusiastic, knowledgeable, personable and thoughtful especially with our group of older travelers. Snorkeling with sea lions, sea turtles and Galapagos sharks, a plethora of tropical fish and a wall of coral was amazing. We were fortunate to have a pod of Orcas play around the boat for almost an hour - mesmerizing. We also saw dolphin at play and numerous marine birds including blue footed boobies, pelicans and frigates plus many other birds, of course - finches, yellow warblers, vermilion fly catchers among them. The marine iguanas were my personal favorites. The captain of the boat was highly skilled and with his crew made the passages enjoyable. The biking, kayaking and especially the hike up Volcano Chico were memorable as well. Not to mention wonderful meals at outdoor restaurants, sunsets on the beach. It was a milestone birthday for my husband, Sherwin Cotler, and Tim and Crystal of Galakiwi made sure we enjoyed a festive dinner complete with delicious chocolate birthday cake and serenaded by the owner of the restaurant in Quito. It was perfect! We'll recommend this trip to all our friends. Many thanks for this trip of a lifetime!

Review by Ted Ning (Evergreen, Colorado, United States) for Tortuga Mar 2 2011
I was very impressed with the staff and their knowledge. I had heard about the tameness of the wildlife, but to experience it directly was incredible. But what most impressed me was the grand experiment of humans and their environment. The synthesis of the Ecuadorian government, the Marine Park, community groups, and other NGOs all working to create a balance between people and this incredible environment. The world is watching.

Review by Jamie Mueller (Ft Lewis, Washington, United States) for Tortuga Jan 19 2011
Nothing you read about can prepare you for actually seeing the Galapagos firsthand. Walking among sea lions and marine iguanas, witnessing the vast extremes betweens the different islands, and feeling the closeness with nature as soon as you get to the National Park. I couldn't have been more impressed with the knowledge and passion of our guide and had all of my expectations met above and beyond what I thought would be possible!
Galapagos Islands - Sherwin Birthday Club Mar 17 2011
Review by Clydia Cuykendall (Olympia, Washington, United States) for Tortuga Mar 2 2011
Thursday, our group flew to Isla San Cristobal, the easternmost of the Galapagos Islands via Guayaquil and checked into the Casablanca hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. At lunch we met our Park guide Pablo, our dive master Franco, and Crystal, wife of New Zealander Tim, who owns “Galakiwi”, our cleverly named travel company for this trip. After lunch, we bicycled from the island’s highlands to its lowlands, passing through El Progresso, an old company town where the workers murdered the sugar magnate who employed them in 1904. We stopped at La Loberia beach to meet the sea lions (which outnumber the people on San Cristobal), watch some marine iguanas fighting (March is mating season) and began our bird watching list (see Appendix). At dinner, Sherwin was feted by fellow traveler Kathleen with a rap song about his passions, another birthday gift.
Friday, some of us went scuba diving and others went snorkeling at Isla Lobos and Kicker Rock. We all saw Galapagos sharks, white tip sharks, a hammerhead shark, and green sea turtles. While scuba diving, I saw a sting ray, a manta ray and an eagle ray, along with many grunts, King angel fish, puffer fish, parrot fish and some orange and purple soft coral growing on the sheer walls of Kicker Rock. In between dives, I snorkeled briefly with “blue fin” Tim, but could hardly keep up with his pace, due to the enormous size of his swim fins. On the way back to Port, we saw a pod of orca whales, numbering at least seven individuals. It was a good day for the sea lion pups to stay on the sidewalks of town! We had 15 minutes to ditch our swim suits and assemble for a trip to the Darwin Interpretive Center, which was a very hot and very interesting place covering both the human and natural aspects of the Galapagos Islands. How were the Galapagos formed? One day millions of years ago, they weren’t there, then the next day, whole landmasses welled up out of the ocean: Molten islands, boiling and slopping about on the surface until they set. Half of the group went back to the hotel to escape the heat, but Frank and a few others climbed Frigate Hill with Pablo to see the harbor and the sunset.
Saturday, we traveled by boat to Isabella Island via Entebel (birds), Champion Beach on Floreana Island (snorkeling), and Devil’s Crown (an underwater volcano crater). During our snorkel, we were buzzed by sea lions and once underway again, we passed through a school of dolphins. Before dinner we visited the local pink flamingo colony. We spent Sunday hiking on the Sierra Negra volcano, which rises nearly a mile above the ocean floor (round trip eleven miles and two 600 foot elevation gains, with the high point on the caldera measuring 3315 feet per Frank’s GPS). This volcano last erupted in 2005 and its lava blackened crater is the second largest in the world (seven miles wide). We lunched under an isolated tree called “El Jaboncilla” whose shade was very much appreciated, then walked across lava flows of various ages, some of which reached the sea. It was a landscape of black and red rock and very little vegetation, just a few ferns and cactuses.
Monday morning we toured Port Villamil’s bay in boats, then disembarked on Isleto Tintoreras to see marine iguanas nesting. Afterwards, we snorkeled in the bay to watch them swimming – they eat sea grass off submerged rocks – a regular convoy. We also saw green sea turtles sleeping on the sandy bottom. After lunch, we hiked to a giant tortoise breeding center, where they are incubating tortoise eggs until the babies hatch and grow shells hard enough to survive attacks by domestic animals like dogs, cats, and pigs, then they are released. Following ice cream at the Center, Bronwyn (Sherwin’s wife, no “Winnie” jokes please) and I went to the Wall of Tears, built when there were penal colonies on Isabella. The road to the wall was built by the US Navy during WWII to access radar stations that were monitoring approaches to the Panama Canal to protect it from Japanese air attacks. On our way back to our hotel, we saw five wild giant tortoises, a testament to the success of the breeding center.
Tuesday morning, we departed Isabella for Isla Santa Cruz, a two hour crossing rough enough to make me sea sick. Upon on arrival, we visited an impressive lava tube in the highlands, which was only discovered in the 1980’s when farm animals started falling into it. The interior coolness of the lava tube was most welcome, since it was about 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside and 90 percent humidity! Then we walked through an area where a farm borders the National Park and wild tortoises wander freely between the two jurisdictions. After a fresh fish lunch, we lounged in our hotel “Lobo de Mar” because many businesses were closed for Fat Tuesday. Some of the group went kayaking at Tortuga Bay, but I stayed behind to watch the daily catch of tunas and rockfish come in for filleting at the fish market, a process made much more amusing by the crowd of pelicans, seals, gulls and iguanas waiting for their share of the offal.
Wednesday, we went to the Darwin Research Center to see more on captive tortoise breeding, a land iguana (orange, unlike the black and gray marine iguanas), and to see Lonesome George (the only tortoise from Isla Pinta left in the world, age estimated to be between 90 and 100 years). Repeated attempts to breed him to females with similar DNA have failed, but we watched him trying to mate with a new arrival! After lunch, we left Santa Cruz to return to San Cristobal by boat and stopped to snorkel at Santa Fe Island. There, we saw a huge school of black striped selama fish, a sting ray, a shark, and the ubiquitous green sea turtles and sea lions. It was awesome to watch Crystal free dive into the fish school and watch them part for her. By the end of this trip, Frank and I had 37 new birds on our list, and we learned that all finches in the Galapagos Islands are collectively called Darwin finches, but they are listed separately by their real names in our list.
On Thursday, we flew back to Quito and enjoyed our final group dinner with birthday-man Sherwin. On Friday, we flew home from Quito via Miami and Dallas. On our 7 am take-off from Quito, I could see four snow covered volcanoes out my plane’s window and later, I saw the Panama Canal as we flew over it. I look forward to reliving this great trip at the post trip party to be themed “Survival of the Fittest”.
Light Footprints Mar 16 2011
Review by Mimi Fields (Olympia, Washington, United States) for Tortuga Mar 2 2011
This was not a trip. This was a life enriching journey providing a better external and internal understanding of the symbiosis and balance of all living things and our inter-relatedness. This was seen through both evolutionary change over time, and stability over time. How incredible to see a light human footprint in the midst of the still existent beauty, calm, and undisturbed wonders of the Galapagos Islands. It was exquisitely special!

Hi, My trip to Peru (Jaguar trip) and Galapagos (Tortugua trip) were EXCELLENT
from all points of view.
1- great guiding
2- great exploration
3- great ACTIVE rhythm
4- great group dynamic
and I should say that the staff, mainly Sally (Jaguar trip), care a lot. At beginning because of the altitude with a negative physical reaction I ended up dehydrated, in addition I lost my luggage. The Cusco staff of Active and Sally took very good care of me and what could had been disastrous turn up to be great. I owe much to Sally. Muchas gracias. I wish I would be thirty years less! The Galapagos part was more smooth, mind you I had much difficulty with the snorkeling at first.
I received the proper help and guiding. I have learned to love snorkeling. At Galapagos Pablo and Ted and the office staff (a young women) were very nice people. Pablo was also very knowledgeable. Nothing but the best! I am working at Parks Canada as a guide interpreter and I can recognize competent people in the field of guiding. I am coming back with the strong impression that Active South America and its staff is a responsible company which has something great to offer.

Politics being what they are around the world, we found ourselves on a Friday night in Argentina redirecting our Condor trip at the very last minute to the Jaguar excursion. A strike prevented travel to southern Chile, but Active South America did a superb job of redirecting our itinerary to join the Jaguar group in Peru. We had a great adventure exploring Peru, particularly the Lares Valley in the company of our passionate and fabulous guide, Sally. It was an entirely different trip - and equally as great as we expect Patagonia to be on our next trek to South America!

They say that in Peru you become awakened. I must say I have seen what they mean. From the moment you step off the plane, you cease to be an American or an Aussie, or wherever you are from and become a Peruvian. The people welcome you as one of their own. The culture makes you want to be a part of it. Our guide, Arturo was the best. When my luggage was lost, he himself became as tenacious as a jaguar to get it back.

After having an awesome time on our Active New Zealand trip we were anxious to do another trip with Active. We eventually decided on the Active South America Jaguar trip to Peru. Apparently we weren't the only ones happy with Active since the rest of our group had also selected this trip based on their New Zealand experience. We couldn't be more happy with our trip and our tour guide Sally. The level of planning and execution that goes into the trip is incredible. The food that was prepared while camping truly was a gourmet experience and all the local restaurants we went to were wonderful. Even though the locations we visited were trip of the lifetime type of places the thing I most enjoyed about the trip was the cultural immersion that our guide provided. Her passion for her home and her desire to show us the real Peru gave us a very special experience. We are already looking into out next Active trip.

Review by Autumn Young (San Jose, California, United States) for Tortuga Oct 27 2010
The term I keep using to describe our trip to the Galapagos is that I was honored to have had the opportunity to visit this incredibly unique place. Traveling with Active South America brought the Islands to life in a way I had not anticipated. Our guide, Pablo, had such passion and interest in the environment and it was contagious. Going on a land based tour was the best way to experience the Islands. We were very peaceful as we watched visitors embark and disembark from dinghys while we sipped our beverages and watched the sunset alongside the residents. We got to see the Islands in a way that no boat based tour could. One of those unique moments was the catching a nightime Census parade and party on San Cristobal. Another was watching a pick up soccer game in a concrete amphitheater in town. The best was while at an early morning breakfast, we watched the lobster catch come in. When a man bought several lobsters, we were able to discern what restaurant he worked at and had fresh lobster off the grill that night for dinner. We really got to be a part of the Islands.
We were cared for every step of the way and didn't have to worry about anything. It was the trip of a lifetime!

Our Jaguar trip was well organized with a fabulous tour leader. Arturo handled with ease anything that was thrown at him. Requests for doctor visits, requests to visit sites not included in the itinerary and even meal requests were all handled with good humour and a smile. The trip was well organized and our trip leader, Yohn, was incredibly accommodating (I'm a picky eater and all he could say was "No problem!"). The itinerary was well balanced with some active time (hiking/walking), down time (shopping or down hill biking) and alone time (free days and time in between activities and meals). Peru is a gorgeous country with varied landscapes (I went on the 10 day trip so missed out on the Lake Titicaca portion) and delicious food. If there was one bit of false advertising in ASA's blurb about this trip, it would be the notion that we would return home energized and refreshed. In fact, I am currently experiencing post vacation blues and wish I was back in Peru! I consider myself an active person and I felt that this trip was perfectly balanced-- giving me some heart pumping days while not making me feel that I was in boot camp. All our guides (Yohn, Olga-Machu Picchu, Frank- Amazon) were knowledgable and provided fantastic insight. A perfect blend of learning a new culture/history and being active!

If you have a fortnight of annual leave to spare to explore Patagonia and want a stress free well organised tour, than I think your money is well spent on this trip.

Condor Trip Highlights Mar 21 2012
Review by Rosemary Morris (Parkes, New South Wales, Australia) for Condor Feb 5 2012
Patagonia weather,we discovered, is very unpredictable and so our Condor trip did not follow the itinerary as printed in the brochure. The day could start out sunny and warm but by days end it could have snowed. this meant our guide Cynthia and the local guide had to monitor the weather and at times plans were altered. Because of the high winds our kayaking trip was cancelled, however a beautiful half day trek took its place. That was one of the highlights for me. The mountain scenery was picturesque and we got wonderful views of condors on the wing and on the way there we had seen a small flock flamingos on a lake. The day we trekked up to see the Torre del Paine was overcast, wet, cold and on the way to the view as we trekked through the forest it snowed. It was spectacular. At the top, the mountains were covered it thick cloud but as we waited the cloud gradually lifted until the Torre del Paine towered above. It was magical . That was a highlight. The day we were to trek along the shore of Lake Nordenskjold and up the French Valley the wind was so strong that we had to be very watchful of the squalls of wind driven water blowing off the lake. Often we were drenched through and forced to run for cover or be blown over. At the French Glacier we could barely stand the wind was so strong. It was exhilarating. The next day the lake was like a mirror and the weather sunny and hot. It was amazing to experience these contrasts. The night before it had rained heavily and when it came to the river crossing it looked too dangerous to cross. Jay, the local guide, spent quite some time finding the safest spot to cross but this still meant wading across a raging stretch of river. It was an achievement to succeed without being washed away!! In Argentina the highlight was seeing the Perito Moreno Glacier. It is immense and you need to see it first hand to appreciate how magnificent it is. Another highlight was finding woodpeckers in the beech forest near El Chalten. I would like to say that our view of Monte Fitz Roy was a highlight but the weather was poor and thick cloud hid the peaks each day ( I saw Fitz roy from the plane as we flew up to Santiago). The highlight for that part of the trip was our hike up Lomo del Pliegue and the view was beautiful despite Fitz Roy still hidden in thick cloud.

We've always traveled alone, so this was our first "tour." We enjoyed it thoroughly, but would have liked a few more nights on our own. We biked on our own on Isabella, and had a wonderful time stopping at all the national park sites along the way-- this would be an excellent addition to the "active" trip, better than the downhill cruising that happens on the first day of the trip. The guides are very knowledgeable, professional and friendly.

Bill and I did feel this trip tried to do to much, we spent alot of time driving arround, and often felt pushed to keep the schedule not a great feeling when on holiday. Wish I had more time at Cotopaxi to explore terrian and wildflowers for example. Two days at the lovoly ranch would hve been nice more hoseback riding.Banos was great for one day not two.Amazon jungle was great lovely hut, would have liked to have spent more time exploring that area. The Termas Papallacta was to much a resort feeling for my taste.Jhayro was a very nice man, certainly looked after us well, he did make one feel we were on a trip and not having an adventure however always pushing us to keep the schedule. This trip would have been nice to a guide that was a naturalist willing to point things out to us.

The food was varied and tasty and Banos was a very charming town.

Trip great in sense that it is flawless executed and guides outstanding. However it turn out to be more water based and less hiking biking and kayaking and way more snorkel based than I had expected. I am way more into land than water based and would perhaps not have come if I had known real program.
Also you should write that it is for confident swimmers only: I am not and that did take some enjoyment out of the trip. Again galakiwi are outstanding but your write up needs adjustment.
The Greatest Backpacking/treking vacation we've done! Feb 16 2012
Review by Sue Dougherty (Rochester, New York, United States) for Condor Jan 15 2012
We're hikers, so we knew in general what to expect from a backpacking trek, but your mountains are higher than ours & we're not the youngest hikers around, so were a little aprehensive. We needen't have worried. our experience had prepared us well! The trails in Patagonia were some of the best we've encountered, especially considering that the treks in both Torres del Paine and Glaciares National Parks are extremely popular. No roots, rocks etc for the most part and only "scrambles" toward the end of one hike... AND we only packed our OWN clothes & food...no shared supplies added. The rewards were the most spectacular views we've ever seen!!! FANTASTIC! I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Never bored for even a moment. This trip is just non-stop. The itinerary can only tell you so much and everything happened as promised, but how do you describe the wonder of a mob of wild horses passing you while riding down a volcano? How do you share the laughter when falling into a pit of mud in the middle of a jungle. It's what's not in the brochure.

Our Trip was great. Guide Yohn was very awesome. Food was fantastic. On and off the trail. I would take Alex our chef home if I could. On the second day of our itinerary, we cycled down Chachani volcano. This was not a gentle downhill as indicated on the itinerary. It was a very rough ride. I enjoyed it, but I was glad when I made it to the bottom without any broken bones. I did hit the ground and I was thankful I had knee pads on. Road was very rocky and rough.
Both hikes were great. I enjoyed the Lares trail over the busy Inca trail. I understand there is a 5-day hike up to Machu Pichu that is less busy and you can take horses. After our hike, we had a day of rest at Cusco. Needed the day off so that was nice. I would have liked one extra day in the jungle to rest with nothing planned. Found it very relaxing.
I would have passed on going to Puno /Lake Titicaca. Three weeks is a long time. I think I would have skipped this part and cut the trip to two weeks, but that is just me.
All in all everything was fine. I was only sick one night with diarrhea and it was our very last night in Puno. Lucky we were in a hotel. I did not get altitude sickness. Took 1/2 dose of diamox and chewed on coca leaves.
Great Job to you team at Active South America. Thanks so much.

A well-organised trip in amongst the chaos that is Cuzco. How all our bags made it from one trip to another never ceased to amaze us!! Must of been the well-oiled team at Active South America :) Peru is a beautiful country with stunning scenery and very passionate people, especially when talking about their ancestors. This was especially so with our guides, Julio, Cynthia and Paula in the Amazon, who were all very knowledgeable. For all the Incas' incredible masonry skills, with perfect joints and geometry, the "bloody Inca steps" (Julio's joke, which made us laugh) were a real challenge and will never be forgotten - a great holiday, thank you.

I fell in love with the people of Peru. They work hard to maintain their culture and language. In this fast paced technologically advanced world we are losing sight of what matters most: community, pride in our differences, family relations, hard work and a love of the land and what it gives back to us. On this trip I felt immersed in all of it. Several times I felt that "overwhelming feeling of well being" that makes you know that you are alive and involved. I've already recommended this trip to my ACTIVE friends.

Review by David Epp (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) for Jaguar Jun 19 2011
The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu were great. Jualio our trail guide(spelling ?) was excellent and very knowledgeable. The bike ride to Cloud Lodge was great fun but concerned about safety for novices. The Amazonia visit was bit disappointing due to cold and wet weather. Very few animals. Need to cancel on Lake Titicacca was disappointing but appreciate reason (due to civil unrest). Yohn did a good job of finding alternate activities.
People need to be aware and prepare for cold temperatures when in Peru highlands ... and Amazon basin as was our experience. Will recommend Active to others.

Review by Kat Sucic (Tucson, Arizona, United States) for Jaguar Jun 19 2011
The trip was really awesome, and I will remember it for the rest of my life. The only reason that I gave it four instead of five stars is mostly due to my own personal preferences and chance occurrences. If we were talking about the trip to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail (and our guides), I would have to give it six stars--it was phenomenal! Now as for the rest of the trip, there was too much car travel. I am particularly susceptible to motion sickness and the trip to the jungle especially would have been a MUCH better experience if we had at least a flight back. Additionally, the bike ride was awesome, but way too long and probably not suited for the entire group. A shorter ride (2-3hrs vs 3.5hrs), better bicycle training, and an alternative option for the less experienced would help prevent a lot of grumblings and injuries. As for freak occurrences, the rain during the bike ride, the cold jungle, the sickness that followed, the raids in Puno that prevented us from seeing the ancient lake, and the snow and generally bad weather did not help the trip--but were by no means your fault. (Maybe having a more concrete back-up plan for each activity would be prudent, however). However, all in all, the trip was pretty amazing, with breathtaking views, physical challenges (see note below), and an intimate glimpse into a country's unique culture.
Sidenote: As for the "activeness" of the trip, I think maybe there could be an option for a more strenuous trip. I felt the amount of energy I exerted during the Inka Trail was what I would have liked to consistently have experienced the entire trip, but instead it felt like the rest was a piece of cake. Maybe this has to do with liability or with the age groups, but it's just a suggestion :)

This was an excellent trip and I knew going into it that I would not be participating in all of the activities. Pablo worked very hard and is a most enthusiastic guide. He took good care of me. Initially he tended to downplay the effort & time an activity would take, but I learned to ask better questions and to make my own decisions. It would have been nice to have at least one or two chances to swim off one of the beautiful beaches and there were opportunities to do do so with just a little tweaking of time. Water was not that cold and other people were in the surf, especially on Isabela. While the name is "active" even the younger folks expressed a desire for some laid back down time. Hotels were comfortable and meals were good. Nick took good care of us in Quito

Taking an Active South American guided tour is a wonderful way to be introduced to a country. It takes any concerns and stress out of the equation. What is left is a knowledgeable guide, and safe transportation. Our guide, Andres, clearly loves his country and was able to pass his enthusiasm on to us. Truely an ambassador for his country. Before long we were all trying to speak some of the local phrases, and pronouncing the names of cities and animals. Our bus driver, Max, was excellent at keeping the bus clean, helping with all of our luggage, and having a great attitude. Never once did we worry about anything. I don't believe I could have ever learned what I did about Costa Rica on my own. Andres was willing to answer any question from local customs to politics. We left with such a respect and warmth for Costa Rica. Paz y amore! Janine

Review by Thomas Parker (Knoxville, Tennessee, United States) for Jaguar Dec 26 2010
Peru was nothing short of amazing. The same can be said for our guide, Arturo, who is everybody's best friend and can go from full crisis-solving mode to telling wonderful jokes and back again in the blink of eye whenever needed. The trip put together a whirlwind tour of the great and diverse offerings of the country. This is certainly one of our greatest family adventures.
My only complaint is that this literally was not the tour that we ordered. We decided on and paid for the family trip, but that was canceled due to too few participants. With non-refundable tickets to Lima in hand, we were offered and accepted an abbreviated alternate tour, which had a few special challenges for kids such as a bicycle several sizes too large and nights that were altogether too short. That said, the challenges were overcome and the awesome experience remains.

We adapted well to unexpected situations such as the heavy rain on our first day at El Chelton, and Cynthia's decision to have pizza and wine at the hotel rather than going out for dinner was good for all of us. Throughout the trip, Cynthia was professional and perceptive of our needs; she was also candid about some of her experiences with large more challenging groups. If your travel company can make enough on small groups (4 - 6 clients per guide), please do so.

I enjoyed most of the trip the views were awesome and the local people very friendly. The few activites I did were amazing and lots of fun and the accommodation apart from Banos. I joined this trip for the activites and meeting like minded folk so find 2 people do not make a trip and my one travelling companion although very nice was lacking in fitness so I ended up missing out on a few activities of which I was looking forward to. Next time I suggest you are more honest as I would not have booked.
Peru is awesome so here are thoughts on making the trip awesome Oct 16 2011
Review by Fiona Kemp (West Leederville, Western Australia, Australia) for Jaguar Sep 4 2011
It is a great trip and Peru is a magical country. I just feel there are a few things that need tweaking and possibly different levels need to be offered so everyone has an awesome time. Some of the hotels were very average (and I'm referring to the bigger cities like Cusco). As I had been solo traveling for three weeks before hand and often stayed in hostels, it would be good to have hotels that had comfortable beds. Excellent meals on the hike and we tried some very nice restaurants. It was nice not to be restricted to a tiny menu like some other tour groups were! I would recommend your trip to others, but I would give them more info on the level of activity on the tour. I know I am unusual in the amount of exercies I like to do and the amount I like to fit into a holiday, but I had hoped that this may have been the tour that could give me this, especially given the price of the tour. But please don't get me wrong, I did have a wonderful time with wonderful highlights like hiking to 4700m with my pack, seeing Machu and paddling Lake Titicaca.

Jaguar - A good overall experience for sure. Jun 6 2011
Review by Kim Kadish (New York, New York, United States) for Jaguar May 1 2011
A good overall experience for sure. One thing I do appreciate about Active, is the type of people who travel. I enjoy the strong personalities and no bull-shit approach. Everyone meshed very well. You guys are lame to think that we should hike the Lares (Lazy trail). Liz spoke up for the group since we were all pissed that we were not given the Incan trail option. You led on prospective customers in believing that was possible. After purchasing the trip, you then did a bait and switch. I will be frank, that was the impression on us all. So, you might want to be CLEAR in letting people know that you need at least 6 months advanced notice for people to do that option. AND, if you do have the Lares trail for people, give them the option of the springs or REAL hiking. Hire two guides if people don't feel the need to be active; separate the groups. As much as the hike was brutal for me, it was worth it because we saw the most breath-taking beauty.
As far as the hike, there should have another guide with Arturo. What happened? Sick or no show is no excuse. He was overwhelmed with taking care of all of us. Get someone who is solid. Period. Arturo worked his butt off.
This trip definitely was not like New Zealand. Having one guide made it more fly by the seat of your pants experience. Arturo needs a satellite phone or some walkie-talkie. AND ANOTHER GUIDE to help him. And your city tour was an utter joke. We paid 80 bucks to have some woman sit in a cab (ok, a personal driver. It felt like a cab) with us. She had very little to offer in terms of knowledge of history and culture. She was polite however.
Beautiful Country, Company rough around the edges. May 21 2011
Review by Betsey Runnberg (Folsom, California, United States) for Jaguar May 1 2011
We are so glad we decided to explore Peru. The country was beautiful and our tour guide, Arturo was wonderful. The views of Machu Picchu and on the Lares Trail were wonderful. Some things like people getting sick, thus slowing hiking progress and a washed out campsite causing us to have to hike into the dark to find a new campsite could not have been prevented, but were handled well by our guide. Some other areas that could have been better managed were disappointing. We were supposed to have 2 guides, but had only one for the whole trip since someone called in sick and there was no back-up plan. I thought an established company should have a protocol for this, and even if there was a delay, a second guide should have been provided by the second day of the trip. This would have helped a lot during the unavoidable situations listed above. Another issue was that we originally signed up for the Inca Trail, but were put on the Lares Trail due to limited permit availability. We did agree to the Lares Trail, which has several routes. When talking with Active SA planning the trip we made it very clear that we wanted a challenge and beautiful scenary. We were not notified of our trail route until 8 pm the night before leaving on the trail. At that time, it was explained to us that we would spend half of the first day waiting around at some hot springs in a small town before starting the short trail to the first campsite. So, in effect, giving us only one full day of hiking. When asked why that route was chosen, our guide said it was the easier route. This was an unacceptable reason seeing as how we flew all the way down to SA for the primary purpose of an amazing hike, not an easy one. The good thing was that our guide, Arturo, accomodated our wishes and changed the route at the last minute to a more strenuous first day hike that would take us through some amazing terrain. The next day was an amazing and worthwhile hike, but was flawed due to our porters going to the wrong site for lunch since they had not been effectively informed of the switch. We were able to eat our trail bars for lunch and another hiking group gave us some bread and soup. This situation could have been avoided if our initial concerns and motivations had been considered when planning the route and then again prevented by explaining the trek plan to us before the night before the hike. I also think that staying in Aguas Calientes an additional night to see more of Machu Picchu would have been great since that place is soooo amazing you can't see all of it in one day. Ollantaytambo is a beautiful little town that we just slept in and left, but there are some beautiful hill ruins that I would have loved to venture around in rather than spend a free day in Cuzco, which is a hectic loud city. Our time in the amazon was great. We loved the lodge, and our guides were very skilled. Overall, we had a great trip, but there were things that went wrong that could have easily been prevented by better communication and back-up plans. We do want to go to Peru again, but will research other guide companies as well.

Severely disappointed Jan 6 2011
Review by Jennifer Gutbezahl (Somerville, Massachusetts, United States) for Jaguar Dec 19 2010
I took your Tortuga trip in the Galapagos a few years ago. It was the first time I'd done a group tour, and I was a bit apprehensive. But Nick White was wonderful, and it was such a delight to be able to depend on someone to take care of the little details that can detract from one's enjoyment of a vacation. So when I was considering visiting Peru, I really didn't consider any other companies - if I went, I was going to go with Active.
Well, the one thing I can say about this trip: It gave me an even greater respect for Nick and all that he did. The guide who led our trip, Carlos, was clearly underprepared and was given insufficient support from the central office. He often seemed confused, stressed, and uninformed about the specifics of the trip. He also seemed to have a great deal of difficulty keeping to a schedule. I recognize that things do not operate the same way in Peru as they do in the states. However I did notice that whenever we were working with one of your subcontractors, things went a lot more smoothly. Also, a Gap Adventures group was on a trip that almost exactly paralleled ours, and we consistently saw them leaving hotels at the time WE had been scheduled to leave while our group waited 30, 60, or 90 minutes for our guide or a vehicle, to arrive.
As I tend to be an active journal keeper, I'm able to provide a day-by-day description of issues that arose:
Day 1: Sunday, Dec 19. I arrived at Cuzco airport expecting to be met by a guide. After spending about 25 minutes looking for the Active sign, I decided to catch a cab - at that point I heard someone calling my name, and met Carlos for the first time. He dropped me off at the hotel, leaving before I had gotten a room or a key, saying he'd be back to meet the group at noon.
The group gathered in the lobby at noon. We had plenty of time to introduce ourselves before Carlos showed up at 12:30. The visit to the market and lunch were both very good, and then we headed to Saqsayhuaman. When we got there, we discovered that we did not have admission tickets. Carlos first asked if anyone knew if the tickets were included or we were supposed to buy them ourselves. We all said they should be included. He asked if we'd mind paying for them and he'd try to get money from Active to pay us back. He then left us for about half an hour while he made phone calls to try to sort it out. He then said we might have luck at a different entrance and walked us up the car entrance to another gate, where we were in fact, able to get tickets.
We got back to the hotel about 6:30, and Carlos told us to meet in the lobby for dinner at 7:30. The entire group assembled by 7:25 and we waited till about 8 for Carlos to show up. Dinner was fine.
Day 2: Monday, Dec 20. Carlos had told us we were being picked up at 8 am. We all brought all our bags down to the lobby at 8. Carlos was there at 8, however, he told us that he'd forgotten to tell us that we were only taking the things we would need for the Inca trail, and we should leave the rest at the hotel. The packs we were supposed to take on the trail (for those of us who were renting packs) were not at the hotel yet. He handed out garbage bags and told us to put our Inca stuff in these. The bags & the bus showed up at about 9:30. The bus was not big enough to hold the bags, so these were put into a car belonging to Carlos' cousin. Due to the disorganization of the packing, several people ended up not bringing items that they needed on the trail - this probably would not have been an issue if we had had sufficient time to pack in our own rooms.
Our bags were not in Ollatambo when we arrived, but did show up during dinner.
Day 3: Tuesday, Dec 21. We were scheduled to leave at 8 am, but the bus didn't arrive till after 9:30. We did a short bike ride, and then went hiking among the ruins. We were supposed to go biking again after the hike, but Carlos pointed out that it was difficult and time consuming to take the bikes down from the top of the bus, and so suggested that we skip it.
Carlos was not going to hike the Inca trail with us, but said he'd meet us at the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu on the morning of Day 7.
Day 4, Day 5. No problems. Despite rain, varying levels of fitness of the group, and exhaustion, Julio & Romulo (our guides) did a great job. Tents, meals and departures were all on schedule.
Day 6: Friday, Dec 24. This was probably the most inexplicable day of the trip, and would have benefited from both preparation & flexibility. We were awakened at 3 am, and rushed out of our tents. The porters took down our tents as quickly as possible - mine was taken down while I was in the bathroom, before I had finished packing. My personal items (glasses, contact lenses, toothbrush, and feminine hygiene products, a Swiss army knife, etc) were still in the tent - they were never returned to me. After a very small breakfast (one pancake, the only small meal we were served on the trip), we moved to the restaurant to get out of the rain. At this point it was about 3:45, almost two hours before the checkpoint opened, and it was pouring rain. Everyone was crowded into the restaurant for over an hour for no reason we could discern.
After this we hiked down to Machu Picchu in the rain. We didn't see Carlos anywhere. We were supposed to spend a couple of hours at the site, but given the rain (and the fact that we'd been hiking in the rain for three days) our group requested a shortened tour and then the opportunity to go someplace indoors. Julio did a great job of getting us to the highlights and providing context in about 45 minutes, and then we caught a bus to Agua Caliente. We arrived at about 10 am. Still no Carlos. We were all very hungry (having only had a small breakfast seven hours earlier), and wanted lunch, and then to return to Cuzco. However, we were told that we were scheduled on a 4:30 train, and that we would be ordering lunch at 1 pm. This, despite the fact that we were in a restaurant that would, presumably serve food at any time. Most of us ended up buying food. And we played cards for several hours.
Carlos showed up at 1, providing a long-winded apology and a more long-winded explanation about how it wasn't his fault that he was only showing up now. We asked if there was a way for us to head back to Cuzco earlier than 4:30 - he said no. We arrived back at Cuzco at about 9:30, and had dinner starting at 10:30.
Day 7: Saturday, Dec 25. Our free day. No problems, although several of our group were pretty sick. Shawn in particular was feeling awful and talked to Carlos about seeing a doctor. He said she probably just had "slow digestion" and that it was common.
Day 8: Sunday, Dec 26. We gathered in the lobby for the bus which was supposed to leave by 9 am, but showed up at 9:30 and left about 10. At the airport, after we had each checked in separately (Nick had printed us boarding passes, which saved a lot of time), Carlos told us that he didn't have money for airport tax, and we'd have to pay our own, but he'd pay us back. On checking in, several of us noticed that our return flight was at 2 pm.
Because we'd gotten such a late start (the Gap group had taken a 9 am flight), and because the rains had washed out part of the road, we ended up not getting to the rainforest lodge until well after dark. Yuri and Aldo (our rain forest guides) did a good job of providing us with information about the amazon, and of finding interesting animals and plants (especially after it got dark).
Day 9: Monday, Dec 27: Shawn was significantly sicker than she had been. Our guides at the lodge, Yuri and Aldo, did a great job of explaining things and finding cool animals for us to look at. Over dinner, Carlos gave another long apology speech to the group, and explained how none of the problems were actually his fault. He told us we would be leaving at 7 the next morning to catch a noon flight. Yuri told us that we could sleep in, as we were catching the last flight of the day, around 2 pm. Carlos seemed confused by this.
Day 10: Tuesday, Dec 28: We had breakfast at 7:30 and left the lodge about 8:30, getting to town at about noon. Carlos told us we'd have a tour of the town, then catch a plane at 2, then get a box lunch on the bus. We suggested that since we had a couple of hours to kill, and we were all hungry, it might make more sense to have lunch in town, but Carlos indicated that there was no flexibility in this. At the airport, Carlos told us again that he didn't have money for our airport tax, and we'd have to pay our own.
We returned to Cuzco about 4:30 pm, and Shawn insisted on seeing a doctor. She was immediately put in a decompression chamber, and told she was too ill to fly all the way back to the US, but would fly to Lima the next day. Karen (her partner) would fly with her. At dinner, Carlos told us we were leaving at 8 the next morning.
Day 11: Wednesday Dec 29: My phone rang at 6 am, telling me the bus was here. I thought perhaps it was for the Gap group (as they seem to be heading out earlier than us) but I was told, no, it was for Active. So I jumped up and got into the shower - the phone rang again. It was Carlos, going into one of his long winded apologies. I told him not to bother apologizing, just to tell me if our bus is here or not, because if it is, I want to wash out the shampoo, and if it isn't, I want to go back to bed. He says it is, and starts explaining how it isn't his fault. I hung up and got back in the shower. He called again & I told him I really didn't want to talk to him. Finished my shower, and got all my bags downstairs by 6:30. None of our group was there. Carlos said the bus was actually for Karen, who was catching a 7:30 plane - even though Shawn wasn't going to be leaving till noon. Karen said she wasn't leaving without Shawn, and both Carlos & the Cuzco
office were completely unhelpful - she ended up having to go to the airport to change her ticket.
Carlos explained that he'd been up all night with Shawn & Karen (who later told us he hadn't been), and so he needed to go home & pack and spend some time with his family - he got back about 9:30. The bus, on the other hand, had shown up on time at 8 am.
We had a long ride to Puno - we were able to get out an bike for about an hour; the itinerary had promised a longer ride, but I guess since we'd started to late that wasn't really possible. It was a really nice bike ride though. There was probably a lot of interesting information we could have gotten about the are we were riding through (it was a very varied landscape and included a number of villages and urban areas) but Carlos slept through most of the ride & so was unable to provide any commentary.
Day 12: Thursday Dec 30/ Day 13: Friday Dec 31: No real problems. Oswaldo, our guide in Puno & on the islands was great, and the folks who put us up in their homes were just wonderful. At dinner on Friday Carlos gave us about 4 different times to meet to leave for the airport.
Day 14: Saturday Jan 1: We met in the lobby at about 8 am, and pretty much everyone in our group wanted to do the Lima tour. Shawn & Karen had already pre-paid for it, and were planning to meet us in Lima - we were all looking forward to seeing them. They had made it very clear to Carlos and to all of us that they wanted to do the tour. And 9 of the 10 remaining people in the group also wanted to do the tour, for a total of 11 people. Some of us hadn't pre-paid, but Carlos assured us that wouldn't be a problem. Carlos took us to the airport and gave a long speech about what a wonderful time we'd all had & requested that we all give him a good recommendation, and say good things about Active to all our friends.
When we got to Lima, we found Shawn & Karen. Supposedly they had called both Carlos & the Cuzco office multiple times, trying to find out where the tour met, but couldn't get any information. And it turns out the car they sent would only hold 9 of us, not all 11 of us. So two people had to miss the tour. It's not clear if they will be charged for it or not.
The tour was good; Vanessa did a fine job of explaining things.
Overall, the itinerary was well-planned, and your subcontractors were all great. But there needs to be a good deal more organization and communication between the Cuzco office, the guide, and the people who have paid a lot of money for the tour. The office really needs to do a better job of ensuring that there is someone involved with the tour who is capable of handling logistics, and of being flexible enough to take care of emergencies as they arise. This person also needs to be supported by the main office when things become too complicated (for example, when one of guests becomes extremely ill) so that they can continue to do a good job for the rest of the visitors.
Again, I'm very disappointed. I had great hopes for this trip, and have recommended Active to a number of friends in the past. Several others on this tour were also returning Active customers, and all of them commented how poorly this compared to their previous Active experience.
I hope you'll make the necessary changes to ensure that future trips go more smoothly.
